Black lightning is a fictional type of lightning referenced in numerous pieces of folklore, myths, and other fiction. Black lightning was first referenced by followers of Skethianity in New Sketherlands around 200 A.D. Numerous Skethish priests referenced the subject, saying that the black lightning was harnessed by Carissa, the goddess of the unexpected. According to these priests, black lightning sent down by Carissa is sent to strike those who have a strong relationship with the goddess, and give them dark powers which may cause chaos and work against the other 12 gods and goddesses of the religion. Those who are considered demons, evil, or maniacal are considered to have been struck by black lightning in Skethianity. The term is used popularly today to refer to anyone as being evil or powerfully evil.

Other mentions of black lightning in fiction include in the QUACK! Comics universe, with black lightning giving Raven's Assassin her powers. In the comic world it also gives Dark Thane his powers.
