The West Snowy Grinders are a professional Roofball team based in West Snowy, and which plays in the Quentinian Roofball Organization. Within the QRO, the team is a member of the Eastern Roofball Conference (ERC), and in that conference they are a member of the ERC Northwest, along with the Boston Privateers and Maximum City Pitch Black. The team plays its home games at First MechEcs Community Stadium, which was opened in 1996.

The team was founded in 1961, making it one of the youngest teams in the league. The Grinders have won the Champions Cup, the ultimate championship game of the league, once in 1997. Founded in 1961, the team is one of the younger ones in the league. The team's current head coach is Loren Olloss, and its current owner is Randy Fedderstoff.

History

The Grinders were founded in 1961, after the league was already developed and had large amounts of fans. The team was not very popular at first, with many residents of the already being established fans of Jameisville Elves and Lindin Founders. However soon the fan base grew, and gained popularity, mainly with residents of the Snowy Peninsula on which the Grinders are located.

In the '60s, the team was not successful at all, and had one of the only defeated seasons in history in 1964. However, in the late '70s and early '80s, things started to look up for the team, and they had a few good winning seasons, led by WO Maddie Rego, culminating in their first and only Champions Cup victory. In the early 2000's, the team had a few losing seasons, but with the help of coach Garret Shaw, the team acquired 4 first round picks for the 2004 QRO Draft. However, the team's administrative manager (AM) at the time, Batty Grosseman's picks failed to produce, with the 2004 draft being considered by many as the absolute worst draft a team has ever had in history.

After this bungle by the front office, in 2011 the owner, Serena Kindy, sold the team to its current owner, Randy Fedderstoff, who immediately cleaned house, firing the AM, head coach, and most other front office executives as well. After new executives were hired that same year, the team went 11-19, which was certainly an improvement from recent seasons, and in 2014 they picked up elite player Peter Vandan, making the tournament twice after his signing. In 2017 the team drafted starterman Marquette Jaklaxks, a former backup turned rising star from Mechanicsburg University, who in his first two seasons performed well, although not at an elite level. Today, despite a disappointing 2019 season, the team has retained both Vandan and Jaklaxks, and continue to be a contender in the competitive ERC.

Boston Privateers

The team's rivalry with the Boston Privateers is perhaps its most intense and meaningful rivalry, especially with the close proximity the two teams share and the four divisional matchups the two play each year. Though in different states, the two teams are in extremely close proximity, and this often results in an overlap of fans, especially with the lack of success the Privateers have had in their history. Early in the history of the rivalry, the Grinders had a large advantage, with their fast-paced style. Into the late 70's, however, the Privateers dominated the rivalry, however, with players such as E.D. McGee especially being hated in West Snowy for his antics and love of trash talk. The Grinders eventually won the upper hand in the rivalry in the 1990's, and this dominant position has been held ever since.

Maximum City Pitch Black

The Maximum City Pitch Black are not far behind when it comes to the important rivalries of the Grinders, and as the Pitch Black has been one of the more successful teams in the league, the Grinders have had to compete at a much higher level, and numerous great Grinders teams have been denied a shot at the Champions Cup by an even better Pitch Black team. This includes the memorable 1971 and 1972 seasons, where the Grinders and Pitch Black played each other in back-to-back title games. The Grinders won the division in 1971, and subsequently beat their rivals in the title game, however lost in the Champions Cup. The next year the Pitch Black won the division, and subsequently beat the Grinders in the title game. The first game was won by a margin of only 20 points, and the second by a margin of 5 points, that was won after a devastating penalty and subsequent free throw attempt that won it for the Pitch Black by 5 points. These two games especially have helped cement the rivalry the two teams have, and although in recent years the Pitch Black have dominated the division, the rivalry is still tense as a result of the rising talent of the Grinders team.
